Ashwinders:

Freshly frozen Ashwinder eggs.
I have always found this creature interesting. My Mother breeds ashwinders for potion ingredients, and for sale to apothecaries. We have several barns that are away from the main house where she breeds them. For the most part we quickly freeze the eggs once the ashwinder has laid them so that they will not burn down the barn. The eggs before they are flash frozen are bright red like glowing embers, however as they freeze the shell thickens and cools to look similar to other snake eggs.

There have been a few times that accidents have happened and we have had to replace the barn. On the last occasion unfortunately the muggle fire department was called so we had to allow them to perform their services and put the barn fire out.
It would seem that things got away from mother this time, and she forgot to look for the eggs before they caught the barn on fire.
Her typical habit is to have magical fires burning within each barn, and allowing one egg from each clutch to hatch. Thus allowing for future clutches.
One of the rooms in the barn, which is also where the magical fire is kept is wholly made of stone with fire retardant spells and shielding spells woven into the stonework. It is in this hatchery that we always place the one ashwinder egg that is allowed to hatch.
This time unfortunately we lost a hundred year old barn as well as part of my mothers storage facilities, and potions lab. Though we were able to rebuild in the same location a few months later. Unfortunately we do have muggle neighbors and as such a new barn built quickly would have been too suspicious.

I personally love the way that ashwinders move pushing and pulling their bodies in a motion that leaves distinct patterns in ash on the floor. Unfortunately I do not currently have a photo, muggle or magical of the ashwinders "footprints" on the floor of our barn. They were kept in the barn in my potions area and sadly met a warm and crispy end in the fire. However as they do move in the same unique way as the Sidewinder, we can see what the pattern of movement looks like from other snakes.

While Ashwinder Eggs are often used for Love potions there are other uses for them. Mother primarily uses them to brew Felix Felicis, which she sells to apothecaries. She also has a few experements that she is working on, and unfortunatly will not tell me about for this journal. something about proprietary information, and patents not being finished.
